★★★★★Michael HowardA brief history of this land. In 1966 my grandfather sold 77 acres to The Girl scouts of America. That along with a few acres donated by another local farmer became Camp Singing Hills. My grandpa grazed his cattle in that woods for 40 years as his father before him had done. When I was a child the whole woods was like a park. Mature trees with nothing but grass between them. Butternut trees scattered throughout the woods. Every fall our family would make our way around the woods collecting gunny sacs of butternuts. After the property was sold the new owners wanted to let the land return to nature and that's exactly what it did. Prickly ash and weeds grew up between the trees. Small trees grew straight up 80 - 100 feet and plugged the canopy blocking the sunlight from the ground. Eventually the ground soured and the big mature forest began dying. The wild grapes moved in and did their part to bring down many mature trees. To be honest there was a time that I felt it wasn't even safe to be in the woods. So many trees losing large branches or completely falling down. The past few years the maintenance man has done a fantastic job of cleaning the place up. Now much of the woods looks like it did when I was a child. The parts of the woods used by the kids have been cleaned up and made safe again. The amount of work that has been done is off the charts. I know that my grandfather would be pleased to see what the camp has become. It's hard to believe it's been 58 years since it became a girl scout camp. I hope it continues for another 58 years. I'm sure many memories have been created there by those fortunate enough to have spent a few days there. My grandfather wanted it to be a place like that.

I was so fortunate to camp in the area called the "Primitive Unit" with quite a hike to get back and up to that area over a little stream. The years that I went there was in the late 1960's early 1970's.
