The Aspen Yacht Club, founded in 1968 to promote sailing, sits on Ruedi Reservoir 18 miles up the Frying Pan River from Basalt. It is a private member club that does not sell sailing cruises, lessons or slips to the public, but every summer since its founding it has sponsored a youth sailing program in partnership with the Aspen recreation department, including a course for kids ages 10 to 16 run with the Aspen Recreation Center. The club also works with Challenge Aspen, Wounded Warriors, Boy Scouts and Aspen High School students.

★Steve BachtelThe Aspen Yacht Club is NOT for everyone. My crew and I were enjoying a lovely day out on the majestic Ruedi Reservoir. My first mate suggested a stop at the yacht club to compare Rolex's with equally well-healed seaman. My tactician measured the wind and suggested a tack and we headed for port. My pitman watched for kelp as we entered the narrow bay. My bowman called out the distance to the dock. We came round to starboard and cast out our breast lines. Upon disembarkment, a rough and calloused fellow declared our kind was unwelcome at the moor. Never in my many sea voyages have I been refused port and certainly not by the likes of this cannon cocker. With haste we cast off and set engines ahead full while watching the Aspen Yacht Club and their poor hospitality fade under the horizon. (They don't allow wake boats)
★★★★★G. K.Private Yacht Club at the end of a bumpy dirt road. Consists of a hut that looks like a forest service shack. Has a volleyball court, port-a-potti, and a tent camping area. The annual Aspen Open Regatta sailboat race is fun. Anyone can pay and enter the race. You too can then play Reudi Roulette. The wind can get vicious here and can switch to any direction at any time. Two boats can be flying spinnakers and be headed 180 degrees in opposite directions and be 100 yards apart. The Daysailer1 National Championships was held here in 1994.
