Started climbing here last year, I learned a ton and love it!

The good: The most important thing, of course, is that the climbing itself is top-notch. Ascension has some solid route setters, no doubt. The staff are amazing and friendly. They have a nice partly separated children's area with easier climbing and a table for birthday parties. The extra workout equipment is a nice feature. Why 3 stars?: After a $25 (if not UAF affiliated) belay class, I can buy a day pass at the University climbing wall for $12 that includes shoes/harness rental. The wall is definitely smaller, but has top-rope options also. Their day pass also gives access to the rest of the rec center which has a track, large gym, 3 basketball courts, pool (schedule depending), and sauna. Ascension charges $22/day + 6 for shoes, down to $18 (no shoes) if you buy a 10-punch card. I will say this IS fair when compared to gyms around the country, BUT, and here's the point- I found Ascension to be quite dirty and a bit too chilly for that price. If you're going to charge a premium like that, I would have appreciated a cleaner mats (we went home filthy!), cleaner holds, cleaner bathroom, hooks not falling off the wall, and maybe another degree in temperature when I'm trying to escape the cold winter. Thank you for considering these improvements!

I went there on a Thursday morning back in the fall. An enjoyable spot indeed. It's challenging, yet enjoyable to climb.

We had such a great experience at the indoor rock climbing gym! It was a rainy summer day and the kids were bouncing off the walls at home, so this turned out to be the perfect solution. The facility is super clean, well-organized, and welcoming. There were plenty of climbing options for all skill levels, including areas that were just right for kids. My daughter especially had a blast — it was the perfect way for her to burn off energy while doing something active and challenging. One of the highlights of our visit was the front desk staff. The gentleman working that day was absolutely fantastic. He was so kind and patient with my daughter, who can be a bit sassy and strong-willed. He handled her energy like a pro, helping her choose the right climbing shoes and taking the time to walk her through the orientation. He explained the rules clearly and made sure she felt comfortable and excited to start climbing. His calm and friendly attitude really set the tone for a positive experience. We’ll definitely be coming back, especially this winter when outdoor activities are more limited. It’s a great place for kids to stay active, build confidence, and have a ton of fun in a safe, supportive environment. Highly recommend for families looking for a great indoor option!

Cool place, worth looking into the membership option if you're a frequent climber, day passes will add up *fast* Front desk was helpful, knowledgeable, and willing to show the full tour to a first timer. Would highly recommend.
