Anderson Woods is an overnight camp for children and adults with disabilities, set on 163 acres of wooded hill country in rural Perry County near Bristow and founded by David and Judy Colby in 1978. Sessions run four days and three nights, Monday through Thursday, across eight weeks in June and July: youth sessions serve ages 7-17 and are capped at 20 campers, adult sessions serve 18 and over and are capped at 25. Most of each day is spent outdoors, caring for barn animals, tending the garden, swimming, fishing, hiking, playing kickball and making crafts, with many meals eaten as picnics or cooked over a fire. Campers' needs range widely, from physical disabilities to Down syndrome and autism; the camp welcomes all races and spiritual beliefs, keeps the session fee low with donor support, and offers financial assistance.
