American Legion Illinois Premier Boys State is a week-long residential government-education program held each June at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, where high school juniors build and run mock city, county and state governments. Delegates campaign and vote through election cycles at all three levels, sit in legislative sessions, form mock political action committees, and attend seminars on the electoral, judicial, executive and legislative processes; they can also join the State Police unit, the news team, the band, or scholastic bowl and sports tournaments. Students live in EIU residence halls and eat in the campus dining hall for the session. Boys are selected and sponsored by local American Legion posts rather than enrolling directly, and essay, speech and Samsung scholarships are attached to the week.
