UPDATE: If anyone cares, their version of "making things right" was to ask for me to give them "actionable advice for how they can better train their staff to cultivate a more welcoming environment" with no mention of compensation. This is after I had already suggested TANGIBLE ways to help Black artist with providing art supplies/discounts, as the cost alone can be a barrier to a lot of people. It is not my obligation to give out DEI training, let alone for free. I also noticed a flood of 5 star reviews after I had submitted mine, but who knows, maybe it's just a coincidence... ------------------ Original Review: I visited the shop to grab some last minute items for a street art festival this past summer. I had never been to the store and was excited to see what they had. I was racially profiled as soon as I walked in the door. For context I am a young Black man and there were 3 white men, who I believe were all employees, in the store. I had also come with my father, older sister, and younger brother. For some reason, when I entered the store, I was not greeted with a "welcome in" or "how may I help you" but was told to go to the tobacco store next door. It was hard for me to hear them but all I heard was "...next door". I think I even asked if there was another entrance or something like that and was told to go next door. I was confused but I went to the tobacco store/smoke shop next door and when I asked where the art store was the clerk told me it was where I had just came from. I went back to the art store and said "this is the art store, right?" and they said yes. I asked why did you tell me to go to the tobacco store and all they had to say was that I "looked confused". Well it was my first time in the store so, yes, I am going to be looking around and might look confused. They continued with the excuse that when people look confused they mistakenly entered the art supply store when looking for the smoke shop. I felt an awkward tension in the air and as much as I didn't want to, I ended up buying some things because I was on a time crunch. Perhaps, if the employees had instead asked if I needed help finding a certain item, or greeted me into the store, this whole mess could've been avoided but instead the first thing you told a Black man walking into the store is to go to the tobacco store next door. Let me say this again, this was the FIRST thing I was told when entering the store. I will never shop here again and would give 0/5 stars if I could.

Matt's doing a good thing here, and the strong feeling of community, creativity, and customer service is real from the moment you walk in the door. I stayed long enough to learn a whole lot about the culture while also having my technical questions answered about the huge variety of high quality products he carries. There's also a collection of unique art and other merchandise representing the culture and local vendors. I also got to see Matt interact with people from all walks of life whether they were local artists or just people supporting their kid's creative hobby. Whoever walked through the door, Matt treated them more like a neighbor than a customer, keeping the atmosphere cool and professional. Nice balance. 👍🏽
