Having just wrapped up my third ceramics/pottery class with Access Arts, I can’t rave enough about the Moss studio and the talented instructors there. For the past two classes, Salem has been our ceramics instructor. Not only was he attentive and provided personalized instruction to each person in his class, but he also made it a very welcoming, friendly, and laid-back atmosphere. From teaching us surefire ways to center the clay on the wheel to demonstrating multiple times how to pull handles and form lids for our pieces, he left no stone unturned when it came to our beginner instruction. In addition to the immaculate vibes of his class, Salem made sure to meet each student where they were in their art journey and offer them individualized encouragement. To say that my friends and I had a blast in his class is an understatement! My first-ever class at Access Arts was taught by Starkie, who was diligent in teaching us the core basics of how to properly wedge our clay, center on the wheel, and pull cylinders. I especially appreciated their attention to detail and ability to really hone in on any clay-throwing issues and provide accurate feedback on what we could do for better results. Starkie also taught me how, when all else failed, to perfectly trim the top of a lopsided piece. Lastly, I want to recognize a frequent studio visitor. As time went on, my friends and I noticed that this black cat would make a point to come to visit students on the very first day of class and then once more on cleanup day. With clay-spackled whiskers, he would observe the class, critique student art, and remind us that he was available for petting. If you’ve ever had an interest in learning how to create your own pots, cups, plates, vases, etc., I highly encourage you to sign up for an Access Art class! Although I attended with a few friends, you don’t have to. You’ll be warmly welcomed in the small-class setting and will quickly feel a part of the pack.
